American Mobile Drug Screening

  • Helping Commercial Drivers and Employers Understand Their Testing Responsibilities
Commercial drivers and transportation employers may be subject to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing requirements. Under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, covered drivers generally include those operating commercial motor vehicles in commerce that require a commercial driver's license (CDL), subject to applicable regulations and exceptions.

  • Who May Be Required to Participate?

  • Commercial truck drivers are skilled professionals who operate specialized commercial motor vehicles that mandate a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to ensure safety and regulatory compliance on the road.

  • 1. Commercial passenger transportation drivers: Drivers operating qualifying commercial passenger vehicles, depending on the applicable requirements.
  • 2. Hazardous materials transportation drivers: Drivers operating qualifying vehicles transporting
  • hazardous materials that require placarding.
  • 3. Owner-operators and independent drivers: Drivers who meet the applicable DOT testing requirements, even if they operate independently.
  • 4. Motor carriers and employers: Companies responsible for maintaining a compliant drug and alcohol testing program for covered drivers.

  • Not every commercial driver or vehicle operator is automatically subject to the same federal testing requirements. Applicability depends on the vehicle, operation, and regulations governing the driver's position.
